Accra–Tamale bus intercepted with over 1,000 ammunition rounds

Police have intercepted an Accra–Tamale passenger bus transporting more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition at the Asankare Police barrier in the Ashanti Region.

The vehicle, a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21, was stopped during a routine security check by officers on duty at the barrier. The bus was carrying 45 passengers and was en route from Accra to Tamale, with Savulegu as its final destination.

According to a police situational report (SITREP), officers became suspicious during the inspection and alerted their superiors. The Divisional Commander later arrived at the scene together with the Juaso District Commander and the Juaso District Crime Officer to supervise a thorough search of the vehicle.

During the search, the police discovered a sack containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition concealed among items on the bus.

The bus was being driven by Mohammed Gzali, aged 42, with his assistant, Mohammed Jabir, 22. When questioned, the driver told the police that the sack was handed to him by an unknown person as a parcel to be delivered to an individual identified as Oboye in Tamale.

Police immediately impounded the vehicle and retrieved the ammunition as exhibits for investigation.

Both the driver and his assistant are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations, as authorities work to establish the source and intended use of the ammunition.
