The Kade District Court in the Eastern Region on Wednesday remanded five students of Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS) for their involvement in the assault of a teacher during the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The accused persons, who pleaded guilty to the charges, were arraigned before the court on Wednesday, January 7. Four of them, all above 18 years, were remanded into prison custody, while a 17-year-old juvenile was remanded into police custody pending further proceedings.
The court ordered that the juvenile’s case be handled separately by a Juvenile Court, in line with Ghana’s laws on child justice. All five accused persons are expected to reappear before the court on January 20, 2026.
The incident occurred after the victim, Michael Quayson, a teacher at Kade SHTS, allegedly enforced strict examination regulations while invigilating the WASSCE, leading to a violent attack by the students.
Scenes of distress unfolded at the court premises as family members and some of the accused broke down in tears when they were escorted into a police vehicle and driven away under guard.
The case has drawn public attention to growing concerns about attacks on teachers and misconduct during national examinations, prompting renewed calls for discipline and respect for educators.
According to Daniel Fenyi, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the court action demonstrates the resolve of the Ministry of Education and the GES to protect teachers and uphold the integrity of the WASSCE.
He stressed that any acts of violence or indiscipline that threaten the safety of teachers and the credibility of examinations will be dealt with decisively to serve as a deterrent to others.
