Police arrest four over Wa West robbery attacks

The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with a series of armed robbery incidents along the Gadi–Chogsia road in the Wa West District.

The arrests follow two separate attacks on February 28 and March 8, 2026, during which victims were ambushed by masked men believed to have emerged from nearby bushes, armed with firearms and machetes.

In the first incident, a teacher, Thomas Dormatey, was shot in the leg before the assailants fled with his mobile phone and an amount of GHC2,600. In a similar attack on March 8 at about 7:30 p.m., Issah Ibrahim was robbed of his phone and GHC2,750 while returning from Jagluu.

Acting on intelligence, police apprehended three primary suspects  Iddrisu Sidibey, 19; Abdulai Bandey, 20; and Suleman Issah Zibrim, 23 at Chogsia. The victims later identified them as the perpetrators.

A search conducted during the operation led to the retrieval of two cutlasses and four mobile phones, which police have retained as exhibits.

Further investigations led to the arrest of a fourth suspect, Abdul Rahman Abdulai, at Gojiyiri near Wechau on March 11. He is alleged to have supplied the firearm used in the robberies. The weapon was subsequently recovered from a bush where it had been hidden.

Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend two other suspects, identified only as Adil and Sambo, who remain at large.

All four suspects have been arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court and remanded into custody. They are expected to reappear on March 26, 2026.

The Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by DCOP Francis Yiribaare, assured residents of its continued commitment to ensuring safety and security in the area.
