The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Ebenezer Prince Kojo Arhin, has commissioned a modern toilet facility and mechanized boreholes for residents of Opem, marking what he describes as a strong start to his tenure after one year in office.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the MP expressed satisfaction with his performance so far, stating that the projects delivered within his first year surpass previous development efforts in the constituency.
“As an MP, I deemed it necessary to improve Mfantseman, especially in areas where residents have long called for support,” he said. “My first year in office has been successful, and I assure the people that before my tenure ends, every community will benefit from at least one project.”
Mr. Arhin outlined key priorities including employment, healthcare, education, road infrastructure, sanitation, and security areas; he pledged to address during his campaign. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining completed projects to ensure their long-term impact, urging residents to take ownership of the new facilities.
Residents of Opem welcomed the development with gratitude, describing it as the first significant government intervention in their community in many years. They noted that the newly commissioned toilet facility would put an end to open defecation practices, while the boreholes would resolve persistent water shortages.
Some residents recounted years of neglect, during which they were forced to resort to unsafe sanitation methods, including defecating in bushes or using plastic waste bags disposed of indiscriminately.
The chief of Opem, Nana Kobea VIII, also commended the MP and the government for the intervention. He revealed that in his 18 years as chief, this is the first time the community has received such targeted development support.
While expressing appreciation, the chief appealed for additional assistance to address drainage and market infrastructure challenges, expressing confidence in the MP’s commitment to delivering further improvements.
The ceremony ended with renewed assurances from the MP that more development projects are in the pipeline for communities across the constituency.
