The Upper East Regional Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abagnamah Fawzia Yakubu, has donated 200 sets of school desks to Kologo Primary School in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, bringing relief to pupils who have long endured a severe shortage of furniture.
The donation follows reports that many pupils in the school were forced to sit on the floor during lessons due to an acute furniture deficit an issue affecting several schools across the Upper East Region’s 15 districts and municipalities.
Speaking during the presentation, Ms. Yakubu said the gesture was in response to the urgent needs of the school and formed part of her broader commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, particularly in the areas of education and child welfare.
She noted that improving learning conditions is critical to enhancing academic performance and ensuring that children are given a dignified environment to study.
“This support is to help create a better learning atmosphere for the children and to draw attention to the pressing needs of schools in the region,” she said.
Beyond the donation, Ms. Yakubu has been involved in a range of community interventions, including support for widows, payment of school fees, settlement of hospital bills, assistance to persons with disabilities, and the implementation of women’s empowerment initiatives. She has also contributed to potable water projects and advocated for youth employment opportunities.
Education stakeholders in the municipality have welcomed the donation, describing it as timely and impactful. They, however, called on other stakeholders, including non-governmental organisations and philanthropists, to support efforts to address the persistent furniture deficit in schools across the region.
The donation has also attracted commendation from women’s groups and youth networks, who say Ms. Yakubu’s leadership sets a strong example of responsive and people-centred political service.
Despite the intervention, many schools in the Upper East Region continue to face similar challenges, with pupils still studying under difficult conditions. Authorities say sustained collaboration will be needed to fully resolve the situation and improve educational infrastructure across the region.
