A 25-year-old excavator operator, Gausu Yusif, has been shot dead while his colleague, Charles Essuman, is battling for his life after they were attacked by unknown gunmen in the Awutu Kwame Whettey Forest in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The incident occurred while the two men were reportedly on an assignment to clear bushes and create access into the forest to enable rock sampling for a proposed stone quarry project.
According to the Awutu Bereku District Police, the victims were using an excavator to pave a path into the forest when the assailants, who were riding on a motorbike, suddenly opened fire on them.
Gausu Yusif died on the spot, while Charles Essuman sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a health facility, where he remains in critical condition.
The Awutu Bereku District Commander, Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, confirmed the incident to Channel 247 News’ Yaw Boagyan, stating that investigations have commenced and efforts are underway to track down and arrest the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Awutu Aberful, Nai Kojo Nam-Quaye, who reportedly handed over the rock concession to Chinese investors, has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to justice.
The brutal attack has heightened security concerns in the area, with residents calling for increased police presence to prevent further violence.
