Solomon Asumadu Is NPP’s Candidate For Akwatia By-Election

Solomon Kwame Asumadu has been widely accepted as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.

Although the official announcement is yet to be made by the party’s national leadership, local executives in Akwatia have already reached a consensus on Asumadu’s endorsement. He currently serves as the constituency treasurer and is also the CEO of Owuo Mining Company. His strong ties with the grassroots and long-standing involvement in party activities have made him the clear favorite among delegates and executives.

The seat became vacant following the passing of the Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi. While the Electoral Commission has not yet declared a date for the by-election, preparations are already underway among political parties to field strong candidates.

There had been rumors that the late MP’s widow, Mrs. Mavis Kumi, was being considered to contest the seat. However, the party has firmly dismissed those claims, stating that no such decision had been taken. The Eastern Regional NPP Chairman, Jeff Konadu, described the speculation as false and urged party members to disregard it.

Meanwhile, some supporters of former MP, Mercy Adu Gyamfi—popularly known as Ama Sey—have been advocating for her return, believing she has the influence to help reclaim the seat. However, the current consensus appears to favor Solomon Kwame Asumadu as the party’s most strategic choice moving forward.

Constituency Chairman Nana Yaw Addo confirmed that the decision was made after extensive consultations with both local stakeholders and the grassroots base. He called on all party members to support Asumadu to ensure a united front ahead of the by-election.

The party is expected to officially announce its candidate once the Electoral Commission releases the full timeline for the by-election.
