The Nayiri’s Palace has condemned the government’s imposition of a curfew on Nalerigu and surrounding communities. On Sunday, July 27th, the government-imposed curfew descended upon Nalerigu and its environs, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The justification was to facilitate the evacuation of students following the killing of two young lives from Nalerigu Senior High School.
But in a strongly worded statement, issued on Monday, 28th July, 2025, the Nayiri’s Palace said, “There is no ongoing conflict to warrant such a measure.Nalerigu the seat of the Mamprugu Kingdom, remains calm and peaceful.
It described the Government’s move as groundless, unjustified, and disrespectful to the authority of the Mamprugu Kingdom.
It also expressed dismay over the government’s failure to consult the Office of the Nayiri before announcing such a significant security intervention describing it as irresponsible, “It is irresponsible to take such actions without the input of local actors and authorities, on the ground”, it read.
The Palace warned against the state’s attempt to link the peaceful Mamprugu area with the protracted conflict in the Bawku Traditional Area and cautioned that it could undermine peaceful coexistence in a region that has long remained calm and accommodating.
Condemning the killing of the two students as “heinous and cold-blooded,” the Nayiri extended condolences to the bereaved families and the wider community. “Their deaths are not only a loss to their immediate families, but also to Mamprugu and Ghana as a whole. These were vibrant, promising young lives- cut short,” the statement mourned.
The Nayiri demanded for four immediate steps to be taken: the lifting of the curfew, a full investigation into the killings, an unqualified apology from the government for the lack of consultation, and a commitment to better engagement with traditional authorities moving forward.
