The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 suspects in two separate robbery operations following sustained intelligence-led investigations across the Northern, Savannah and Ahafo regions. The arrests relate to a highway robbery involving a Member of the Council of State and a coordinated armed attack at Nkaseim in the Ahafo Region.
At a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Ms Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the operations form part of broader efforts to combat robbery and other violent crimes nationwide.
In the first case, police arrested seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery that occurred on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale–Buipe Highway. The victim, a Member of the Council of State, was attacked by armed men and robbed of personal items including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches and a laptop.
Investigations led officers to Salaga in the Savannah Region, where one suspect was found in possession of a mobile phone traced to the victim. Further arrests followed in Salaga and Tamale after police tracked the movement of the stolen device through a phone shop and repair network.
A search conducted at the residence of one suspect led to the retrieval of firearms, ammunition, assorted mobile phones, wristwatches, knives, a motorbike and substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
Police said one of the suspects is an ex-convict previously jailed for robbery, while investigations are ongoing to arrest additional accomplices believed to be on the run.
In a second operation, five suspects were arrested over a violent robbery attack at Nkaseim on December 2, 2025. The suspects allegedly blocked the Goaso–Tepa road and simultaneously attacked the Nkaseim Police Station, a rural bank, and cocoa and gold buying companies, making away with cash and two AK-47 rifles. An employee of a cocoa buying company was shot and injured during the attack.
According to the CID, the suspects were arrested on different dates following forensic analysis and intelligence gathering across Nkaseim, Chereponi, Karaga and Kumasi. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the alleged gang leader and recover the remaining stolen firearms.
COP Donkor urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly when travelling at night or engaging in online transactions, and encouraged citizens to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station. She commended officers involved in the operations and thanked the public and media for their continued support in the fight against crime.
