The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has designated the Ghana Police Service as the only security institution responsible for providing security during its presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
In a statement issued by the party’s Presidential Elections Committee, the NPP stated unequivocally that it will not tolerate the presence, deployment, or activities of any unauthorised security personnel, including non-uniformed or plain-clothed operatives from National Security or any other institution, at voting centres, collation points, or any activity connected to the conduct of the primary.
According to the statement, the party has received information suggesting that some elements within National Security may be planning to deploy unauthorised operatives for the exercise. The NPP warned that any such action would be considered a deliberate and unlawful intrusion into the party’s internal democratic processes, with the potential to disrupt or manipulate the election.
“The NPP will not hesitate to invoke all lawful remedies available to it to protect the integrity of this process,” the statement said, adding that any unauthorised presence would be challenged and resisted strictly within the bounds of the law.
The party expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service, noting that the Police have demonstrated sufficient capacity and professionalism in managing electoral security in the past. It therefore expects the Police to enforce the directive strictly and ensure that only duly authorised and identifiable police officers are deployed throughout the exercise.
The statement was signed by the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who reiterated the party’s commitment to a free, fair, and orderly presidential primary.
