Over 50 displaced as storm fells power lines in Ajumako Kyibel

More than 50 residents of Ajumako Kyibel in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District have been displaced following a heavy downpour that brought down electricity cables and caused widespread destruction in the community.

The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, March 23, 2026, has left residents in fear as several live power lines remain strewn across streets, including areas close to a local school.

Speaking in an interview with Channel 247 News, Yaw Boagyan reported that the affected residents are currently taking refuge in classrooms and church premises after their homes were either damaged or rendered unsafe.

Several buildings in the community suffered severe roof damage, while properties and domestic animals were also lost during the storm. Residents say the situation has created a dangerous environment, particularly for children who may unknowingly come into contact with the fallen cables.

There are also concerns that weakened structures could collapse if urgent intervention is not provided.

The displaced residents have appealed to the government, the District Chief Executive, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for immediate assistance.

Traditional authorities in the area, including chiefs and elders, have also called for support in the form of roofing sheets, cement, and other building materials to help restore damaged homes.

They warn that the presence of exposed electricity lines near public spaces, especially schools, poses a significant threat and could lead to tragedy if not addressed promptly.

For now, many affected residents remain stranded, spending nights in temporary shelters as they await relief.
