A man believed to be in his late 50s has died after being run over by a vehicle while attempting to cross the Mankessim–Cape Coast highway at Kormantse in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.
The deceased, identified as Kobina Ebo from Abandze, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses told Channel 247 News’ Yaw Boagyan that the victim was seen wandering in the middle of the road in an unsteady manner moments before the crash.
According to accounts, the driver of a Stambic vehicle with registration number GW-1745-16, which was traveling from Takoradi towards Accra, attempted to swerve to avoid hitting him. However, Kobina Ebo allegedly staggered into the vehicle’s path and was fatally struck.
Some residents described the deceased as a known drunkard in the community and suggested the driver could not have avoided the collision under the circumstances.
He was rushed to the Saltpond Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Medical personnel confirmed he sustained multiple injuries, including severe leg fractures.
Upper Kormantse Assemblyman, Hon. Gideon Okyere, said the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, as the deceased was reportedly heading home.
He expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents on that stretch of the highway, describing it as a known accident-prone area. According to him, several lives, including those of schoolchildren, have been lost there due to speeding vehicles.
The assemblyman reiterated calls by the community for the installation of speed ramps to help reduce accidents and urged both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Saltpond Government Hospital mortuary for autopsy, while police have commenced investigations into the incident.
