The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised concerns over the safety and suitability of Toyota Voxy vehicles for use on public roads in Ghana, particularly for commercial passenger transport on long-distance routes.
In a public notice issued on January 14, 2026, the Authority said it had taken note of growing public concerns regarding the widespread use of Toyota Voxy vehicles across the country. According to the NRSA, a significant number of these vehicles were originally manufactured as right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles and later converted to left-hand drive (LHD) after importation.
The NRSA explained that reports indicate some of the converted vehicles may experience handling and stability challenges, especially at higher speeds and on curves. These concerns, the Authority noted, raise questions about the roadworthiness and overall safety performance of such vehicles when used for commercial passenger transport.
In response, the NRSA said it is constituting a Technical Working Group to comprehensively investigate the reported safety concerns and provide recommendations to guide any necessary regulatory actions.
Pending the outcome of the investigations, the Authority has issued an interim public advisory, urging motorists and the travelling public to exercise heightened vigilance when using or patronising Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial transport, particularly those that have undergone RHD-to-LHD conversion.
The NRSA stressed that the advisory is purely a precautionary public safety measure and does not constitute a final determination on the safety or roadworthiness of Toyota Voxy vehicles. Road users have been encouraged to make informed decisions in the interest of personal safety while investigations continue.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer road use and protecting lives across the country.
