NPP 2024 parliamentary candidates back Bawumia’s 2028 bid

A group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates who contested the 2024 general elections have formally declared their collective support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections.

The declaration was made at a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The candidates said their decision was based on Dr. Bawumia’s leadership experience, commitment to party unity, and vision for Ghana’s economic transformation.

One NPP parliamentary candidate, Akosua Manu, said Dr. Bawumia’s leadership prioritises national progress over personal ambition, underscoring his perceived integrity and focus on development.

Dr. Bawumia has been a frontrunner in the flagbearer race, with some polls indicating he leads among delegates ahead of the January 31 primaries. He has also been actively campaigning across key regions, highlighting his track record of innovative thinking and grassroots engagement as reasons delegates should support his bid.

Meanwhile, tensions within the NPP flagbearer contest have surfaced, with calls from some party voices urging the race to focus on ideas rather than tribal or personal attacks.

The endorsement comes less than a month before the NPP’s presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026, as the party prepares to select its next leader following the 2024 general elections.
