President John Dramani Mahama has called for a comprehensive review of Ghana’s pension regime, citing the need to ensure fairness and equity for all categories of workers across the country. He emphasized that the current pension structure must be re-evaluated to better serve both public and private sector employees.
According to Mahama, the disparities in the existing system create undue hardship for some retirees, particularly those in the private sector and lower income brackets. He stressed the importance of a sustainable and inclusive pension system that guarantees dignity for all workers upon retirement.
“We must restructure the current pension arrangement to ensure that no Ghanaian worker is left behind. A review has become necessary to ensure fairness for all,” he stated.
In addition to pension reform, President Mahama also announced plans to collaborate with the Teachers Fund to develop affordable housing units for educators across the country. The initiative, he said, is aimed at improving the welfare of teachers and ensuring they have access to decent and secure accommodation.
“I have passed a directive that every school built from kindergarten level must come with a teachers quarters so that the teachers teaching there must have accommodation” Mahama noted.
The proposed initiatives are part of Mahama’s broader vision to strengthen social protection systems and improve the living conditions of Ghanaian workers and teachers at large.
