The Kusaug Traditional Council has issued an appeal for calm and urgent steps to restore peace in the Bawku area, following recent incidents of violence that claimed the lives of three students from Bawku and Nalerigu Senior High Schools.
In a statement dated July 29, 2025, and signed by Zug-Raan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the Overlord of Kusaug, the Council expressed condolences to bereaved families and condemned the needless conflict that continues to disrupt communities and claim lives in the region.
“This is a time for sober reflection,” the statement reads. “The needless loss of life, disruption of communities, and long-standing curfews—particularly the one imposed on Bawku since 2021—are painful reminders of the cost of actions that flout legal and constitutional norms.”
The Council reiterated that the Bawku skin has been legitimately occupied for over four decades by a Paramount Chief recognized under Ghanaian law. It warned that recent tensions in the area were escalated by external forces seeking to challenge this legal and traditional authority, despite rulings from the Supreme Court, the Houses of Chiefs, and successive governments.
It further condemned the spread of violence to previously peaceful areas like Bolgatanga, Goaso, Accra, and Kumasi, warning that such developments threaten national unity and undermine peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups.
While commending state efforts to maintain peace and security, including the imposition of curfews, the Council urged that these measures be applied fairly and not allow any group to feel above the law.
“We urge all parties to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and to prioritize civil and traditional engagement, respect for traditional boundaries, and adherence to the rule of law,” the statement urged.
Zug-Raan Azoka II emphasized the Council’s commitment to peace, rule of law, and development, adding that the people of Kusaug are ready to work toward a future where children can attend school without fear and communities can thrive in unity.
The release concluded with a call for justice, equity, and recognition of legitimate authority as essential ingredients for achieving lasting peace in the area.
