Ghanaian gospel legend Yaw Sarpong passes on

Ghana’s gospel music fraternity has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of renowned gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, whose passing was confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

The news of his death, which spread rapidly across social media and gospel platforms, has shocked fans, fellow musicians, and church communities nationwide. Details surrounding the cause of death are yet to be officially disclosed by the family.

Yaw Sarpong, best known as the leader of the celebrated gospel group Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, was one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s gospel music history. With a career spanning several decades, he played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary Ghanaian gospel music through powerful worship songs and spiritually uplifting messages.

His music became a mainstay in churches and Christian gatherings across the country, earning him respect as both a minister of the gospel and a musical icon. Over the years, Yaw Sarpong mentored several gospel musicians and contributed significantly to the growth of choral and group gospel performances in Ghana.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the music industry and Christian ministry, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in 2025.

Tributes have continued to pour in from industry players, clergy, and fans, many describing him as a humble servant whose songs strengthened faith and transformed lives.

Funeral arrangements and official family statements are expected to be announced in the coming days as the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most cherished gospel legends.
