Ghana summons Russian ambassador over viral explicit videos

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov, following the circulation of alleged sexually explicit videos involving Ghanaian women without their consent.

In a press release issued in Accra on February 17, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that the summons was carried out on the instructions of the Minister for Foreign Affairs to formally register the government’s strong protest over the unlawful conduct of a supposed Russian national linked to the viral content.

According to the Ministry, the action was intended to express Ghana’s displeasure over what it described as a serious violation of the privacy and dignity of the victims, and to seek the cooperation of Russian authorities in pursuing justice.

Ambassador Berdnikov acknowledged the gravity of the matter, noting the violation of the victims’ privacy and the broader cybercrime implications. He assured Ghanaian authorities of the willingness of his country to cooperate fully in investigations and efforts to identify and apprehend the individual responsible.

However, the Ambassador indicated that Russian authorities are unable to immediately confirm the nationality of the suspect. He explained that the purported name circulating in media reports does not correspond with any known Russian name and may instead be an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.

The Ambassador further disclosed that similar activities linked to the same individual had been reported in other countries and were already under investigation by Russian experts.

Despite the absence of a formal extradition treaty between the two countries, Ambassador Berdnikov pledged that the Russian Embassy would share relevant information with Ghanaian authorities to support ongoing investigations and ensure accountability.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to using all available international legal tools and diplomatic channels to secure justice for the victims, while maintaining cordial bilateral relations with Russia.
