A late-evening fire outbreak has caused widespread destruction at the Sofoline mechanic enclave in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region, burning over 100 vehicles and flattening numerous auto repair workshops.
The blaze, which erupted around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, tore through the area with alarming speed, consuming engines, spare parts, upholstery materials and tools used by artisans. Many shop owners were unable to salvage any property as the flames engulfed the tightly clustered structures, leaving livelihoods in ruins.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived shortly after the outbreak but faced challenges containing the inferno due to the intensity of the flames and the nature of materials at the site. After sustained efforts, the fire was brought under control, preventing further damage to adjoining properties.
Although no injuries or fatalities were recorded, the incident has left scores of mechanics and apprentices displaced and counting heavy losses. Several affected artisans described the incident as one of the worst fires to hit the enclave in recent years.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established. However, some victims believe it may have originated from refuse burning within the area. The GNFS has since launched investigations to ascertain the source of the blaze.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has commenced a comprehensive assessment of the damage to determine the level of support required for affected victims.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who has been briefed on the situation, appealed to the public to cooperate with emergency services and comply with safety instructions.
He further advised residents to take fire safety seriously, particularly during the dry season, and to steer clear of the affected area while investigations and assessments continue.
