A funeral meant to celebrate the life of a 40-year-old Presbyterian Church steward, George Kwame Antwi, was thrown into turmoil on Saturday, January 17, 2026, after his family discovered that his body had mysteriously gone missing from the mortuary.
The shocking revelation occurred at the Assin Brofoyedur Mortuary in the Central Region, just hours before Antwi was scheduled to be laid to rest. According to the family, they were informed that his body had already been buried three months earlier by an entirely different family who had mistaken him for their deceased 75-year-old relative.
The disclosure turned what was expected to be a dignified funeral ceremony in Assin Odumase into a scene of confusion, anguish and disbelief. Mourners had travelled from across the country, canopies had been mounted, sound systems tested, caterers had completed cooking, and undertakers were on standby when the crisis unfolded.
Trouble began when a team sent to retrieve the body from the mortuary returned empty-handed. The family was subsequently directed to the police station, where they were officially informed of the mix-up.
“Before the team could proceed, we were asked to report to the police station, where we were told that another family had mistakenly buried our relative about three months ago,” head of the family, Asare Obeng, told Channel 247 News.
George Kwame Antwi, who passed away in September 2025, had been kept at the Assin Brofoyedur Mortuary for about four months. Preliminary investigations indicate that a body swap occurred late last year when a family searching for their 75-year-old patriarch was wrongly handed Antwi’s body.
Despite the significant age difference, the family reportedly went ahead with the burial. Meanwhile, the remains of the 75-year-old man were allegedly left behind in the mortuary freezer, unclaimed and wrongly labelled.
The error has left the Antwi family in emotional and logistical limbo. While the Presbyterian Church had prepared to give their dedicated steward a befitting farewell, the absence of his body has shocked both the church and the wider community.
Beyond the emotional trauma, the family says it has suffered severe financial loss, having already spent thousands of cedis on funeral arrangements.
The family has since issued a formal demand for immediate action, including a court-ordered exhumation of Antwi’s body, full compensation to cover wasted funeral expenses and legal fees, and a thorough investigation into the conduct of mortuary attendants whose alleged negligence led to the body swap.
