The Municipal Chief Executive for Upper Denkyira East, Hon. George Anane, has commended a Channel 247 journalist for his courageous and consistent reporting on illegal mining activities within the municipality.
The MCE specifically praised Benjamin Antwi of Channel 247 TV for his investigative documentaries that have exposed the devastating impact of galamsey on local communities, water bodies, and farmlands. According to Hon. Anane, some illegal mining operations in the area only came to his attention after the journalist’s detailed reports brought them into the public domain.
He acknowledged that the media continues to play a critical role in the national fight against illegal mining, noting that journalists who venture into mining sites risk intimidation and threats in the course of their work.
“His reports have not only informed the public but have also guided authorities in taking action,” the MCE stated, pledging to collaborate with the media and relevant security agencies to clamp down on illegal miners operating in the municipality.
Hon. Anane further urged other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and the central government to recognize and support journalists who are committed to environmental protection and accountability.
Benjamin Antwi has for years reported extensively on galamsey, holding leaders accountable and highlighting the environmental destruction caused by recalcitrant miners. Despite the risks involved, he has remained steadfast in his mandate to demand action and protect the environment.
In the same vein, the MCE also acknowledged the efforts of Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group and Idan Enock Danquah of Media General for their fearless reporting and documentaries on illegal mining across the country. He noted that their work has significantly contributed to national awareness and strengthened the broader fight against galamsey.
The commendation underscores the growing recognition of the media’s influence in driving transparency and strengthening efforts to end illegal mining in Ghana.
