Ablekuma North Re-run: NPP Supporters Defy Party Directive Against Participating In Exercise

Despite the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) official decision not to participate in the Ablekuma North rerun elections, some party supporters appear to be charting a different course ahead of the poll.

Speaking to Channel 247 News, the Ablekuma North Constituency Organizer of the NPP, Abubakar Braimah, together with a group identifying itself as Friends of Akua Afriyie, confirmed growing tensions within the party’s base as the rerun in 19 polling stations is scheduled for tomorrow.

“The party says it won’t contest, but the supporters do not agree,” Braimah noted.

The development comes on the heels of a high court ruling that quashed Akua Afriyie’s legal challenge against the rerun, granting the Electoral Commission the green light to proceed with its constitutional mandate.

Nana Akua Afriyie, a former Member of Parliament and prominent NPP figure, has since not declared her intention to contest in the rerun, despite the party’s decision to stay out of the process and her supporters and friends decision to stay in. The move has sparked internal debate and drawn a surge of grassroots support, with many constituents expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s withdrawal from the contest.

The Electoral Commission maintains it is prepared to conduct the rerun as planned, even as political observers monitor the unfolding rift within the NPP’s local structure.
