Al Ahly opens African women’s volleyball championship in Egypt

Al Ahly Sporting Club has officially opened the African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in Egypt, bringing together 17 teams from across the continent for the prestigious tournament scheduled to run until April 24.

The opening ceremony, held at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Hall, was attended by top sports administrators and dignitaries, including African Volleyball Confederation President Bouchra Hajij, Al Ahly’s Board of Directors, Executive Director Dr. Saad Shalaby, Egyptian Volleyball Federation President Yasser Qamar, and other key officials from participating teams.

The colourful ceremony featured a ballet performance by Al Ahly’s ballet team, followed by a vibrant parade of the participating clubs, setting the tone for what is expected to be a highly competitive championship.

Speaking at the event, Bouchra Hajij expressed pride in Al Ahly for hosting the tournament, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen unity and cooperation among African nations through sport. She noted that staging the competition in Egypt adds significant value, given the country’s reputation for successfully hosting major continental and international events.

She also commended Al Ahly for its hospitality and excellent organisation, highlighting the club’s long-standing experience in hosting high-profile competitions. Hajij further praised the efforts made to ensure a comfortable and professional environment for all teams.

Addressing the players, she encouraged them to serve as role models and ambassadors of the continent, urging them to uphold the values of sportsmanship while delivering their best performances.

The tournament’s organising committee, led by board members Mohamed Al-Ghazawy and Ahmed Hossam Awad, confirmed that comprehensive logistical and administrative measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth competition, with special attention to the welfare of all participating delegations.

Matches will be played at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Hall and the Martyrs Hall, with fans expected to witness thrilling volleyball action as clubs compete for continental glory.
