CETAG suspends nationwide strike after government releases funds

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has suspended its nationwide strike following the release of funds by the government to settle some outstanding financial obligations owed to its members.

In a press release dated February 16, 2026, and signed by National President Mr. Maxwell Bunu and National Secretary Mr. Fidelis Kamaayi, the Association announced that the decision takes immediate effect. The strike, which began on November 24, 2025, had disrupted academic activities across the country’s Colleges of Education.

According to CETAG, the government has released funds to facilitate the payment of the All-Year-Round Work Compensation for additional duties performed in 2022, the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance arrears, and the 2022 Research Top-Up Allowance for Akrokerri College of Education.

The Association described the development as a significant step toward addressing the concerns that led to the industrial action and commended the government for responding to the critical financial commitments.

However, CETAG noted that two major issues remain unresolved and are currently before the National Labour Commission (NLC) for adjudication. These include the outstanding Book and Research Allowance arrears for the 2022/2023 academic year, which the Association insists should be paid on a pro rata basis, and the downgrading of experienced teaching staff holding master’s degrees in the Colleges of Education.

CETAG expressed concern that the downgrading of affected staff undermines professional dignity and contravenes agreed conditions of service as well as provisions of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

While suspending the strike in good faith, the Association urged the NLC to expedite action on the pending matters to ensure a comprehensive and lasting resolution. Leadership further assured members affected by the downgrading that their concerns remain a top priority.

CETAG has therefore directed all members across the Colleges of Education to resume academic duties and return to lecture halls effective Monday, February 16, 2026.

The Association also expressed gratitude to its members for their solidarity and patience throughout the strike period and thanked students, parents, and other stakeholders for their understanding and support. CETAG reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement and dialogue in the best interest of teacher education in Ghana.
