The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu , has alleged that no Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound was constructed in the Volta Region during the eight years of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
According to him, the absence of new CHPS facilities over the period significantly affected access to primary healthcare delivery in many rural and underserved communities across the region.
Mr. Gunu made the remarks during the sod-cutting ceremony for a two Health Directorate Office Complex at Tokor in the Ketu South Municipality. The project is being spearheaded by the Akonta Foundation under the leadership of philanthropist Felix Akakpo, also known as Torgbui Tenuvi II.
He stated that the current Mahama-led administration is determined to reverse what he described as years of neglect in the health sector in the Volta Region. As part of that commitment, he announced plans to construct at least 36 CHPS compounds annually across the region to expand primary healthcare access.
The Regional Minister stressed that improving healthcare infrastructure remains a top priority, noting that government is focused on ensuring equitable distribution of health facilities to bridge gaps between urban and rural communities.
He also highlighted ongoing investments in education infrastructure, including classroom blocks, dormitories, dining halls and staff accommodation, as part of broader development efforts in the region.
Mr. Gunu expressed appreciation to traditional leaders and development partners for their continued support, emphasizing that collaboration between government and stakeholders is essential to accelerating development in the Volta Region.
