Bulenga chiefs petition for creation of Wa South district

Traditional leaders from Bulenga and Manwe in the Upper West Region have formally petitioned the Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Puizuing Lwanga Esq, for the creation of a new Wa South District carved out of the existing Wa East District, with Bulenga proposed as the capital.

The petition was presented during the minister’s working visit to the Bulenga and Manwe traditional areas. Delivering a welcome address at the Bulenga Traditional Council Conference Hall, the Paramount Chief of the Bulenga Traditional Area, Naa Seidu Nawologime IV, handed over a petition and draft constituency documents for onward submission to President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Naa Nawologime, the call for a Wa South District has been a long-standing demand of the chiefs and people of the area. “Over the years, successive governments have been petitioned for the creation of Wa South District. Today, we formally present our request,” he stated.

The chief congratulated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on its December 2024 electoral victory and commended the government’s post-January 2025 initiatives, including the 24-Hour Economy policy, the One Million Coders Programme, the Stress-Free Fee Policy for first-year tertiary students, and the Nkankan Ketenketen Programme. He described these interventions as laying a strong foundation for inclusive growth, national resilience, and sustainable development.

Emphasizing peace and security as prerequisites for development, Naa Nawologime called for stronger collaboration with traditional authorities, including chiefs and queen mothers, to maintain harmony and prevent conflicts within communities.

Beyond the proposed district creation, the Bulenga chief outlined several pressing development needs. These included the speedy completion of the Wa–Bulenga road under the government’s “Big Push” policy, the revival of an abandoned warehouse project to support farmers, the upgrading of the Bulenga Health Centre to a polyclinic, and the construction of a Senior High School to expand access to education under the Free SHS policy.

He also appealed for the construction of a dam or dugout in the Bisikan community, where residents currently depend on two boreholes shared with livestock, particularly during the dry season.

Later at the Manwe Traditional Council Hall, the President of the Manwe Traditional Council, Naa Alhaji Abubakari Yussif Wiah, echoed similar sentiments, describing the minister’s visit as the beginning of a strong partnership between traditional authorities and government. He reaffirmed the community’s commitment to peace, environmental protection, and development, citing priority projects such as irrigation dams, road networks, and logistical support for local institutions.

Responding to the concerns, Regional Minister Charles Puizuing Lwanga Esq assured the chiefs that issues within his mandate would be addressed, while others would be escalated to President John Dramani Mahama for consideration. He further announced that the President is expected to visit the Upper West Region on January 31, 2026, to launch a regional investment blueprint aimed at attracting investors and accelerating development.
