Ghana grants passport approval to US YouTuber IShowSpeed

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to popular American YouTube streamer IShowSpeed, citing confirmed ancestral and cultural links to the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision, explaining that the approval followed due verification of the content creator’s historical and cultural ties to Ghana. According to the Minister, the move aligns with Ghana’s long-standing commitment to reconnecting with members of the African diaspora.

Mr. Ablakwa said the decision reflects Ghana’s openness to individuals of African descent who maintain genuine links with the country and contribute positively to its global image.

IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., is a globally recognised digital creator with tens of millions of followers across online platforms. He rose to prominence through live-streamed gaming, travel, and entertainment content that attracts a massive international audience.

The YouTuber recently visited Ghana as part of his Africa tour, a trip that drew widespread global attention through live streams and viral online moments. His interactions with local communities, culture, and public spaces showcased Ghana to millions of viewers worldwide, sparking renewed international interest in the country.

The Foreign Affairs Minister praised the streamer for promoting Ghana and Africa on the global stage and encouraged him to continue projecting positive narratives about the continent.

The passport approval forms part of Ghana’s broader diaspora engagement strategy, which seeks to strengthen cultural bonds, people-to-people relations, and connections with Africans and persons of African descent living abroad.
