The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate dismissal of the Director General and Board Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) following the circulation of the 2025 Teachers’ Manual containing LGBTQ+ content.
Speaking to the media in Parliament, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said the Minority finds it unacceptable that such material was approved and printed without adequate oversight. “We demand the dismissal of the Director General and Board Chairman of NaCCA,” he stated.
Mr Assafuah criticised what he described as a serious oversight failure, stressing that accountability must be enforced within the education governance structure. He further called for the immediate withdrawal of all teaching and learning materials that contain LGBTQ-related content.
The Minority also demanded a full parliamentary inquiry into the development, approval and circulation of the controversial manuals to determine how the content found its way into official educational materials.
According to Mr Assafuah, Parliament responds to public pressure and scrutiny, warning that silence from stakeholders could weaken accountability. He urged parents, clergy, civil society organisations and teacher unions to closely examine educational content to ensure it aligns with Ghana’s cultural and religious values.
Meanwhile, NaCCA has explained that Teachers’ Manuals were introduced for the first time during the rollout of the new Senior High School curriculum in the 2024/2025 academic year to support effective teaching and learning.
Following public backlash, NaCCA issued an apology and announced a recall of the affected materials. However, the NPP Minority maintains that the inclusion of LGBTQ+ concepts in the 2025 Teachers’ Manual is a recent development and not linked to the party’s previous tenure in government.
