Ghana has signed a contract with Airbus Helicopters for the acquisition of multi-mission helicopters to strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces. The deal, awarded by the Ministry of Defence, marks a significant step in enhancing the country’s defence, security and emergency response capabilities.
Under the agreement, Ghana will acquire two H175M helicopters, alongside one ACH175 and one ACH160. The H175M aircraft will be deployed for a wide range of military and security missions, including troop transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical services and disaster relief activities.
The ACH175 and ACH160 helicopters will be operated primarily for transport purposes, supporting both government and strategic missions. The purchase makes Ghana a leading customer in West Africa for Airbus’ premium corporate helicopter range.
Speaking on the deal, Head of Africa and Middle East Region for Airbus Helicopters, Arnaud Montalvo, said the agreement signals Airbus Helicopters’ return to Ghana with a renewed focus on partnership and customer support. He noted that the deployment of the H175M in Ghana highlights the aircraft’s versatility across defence and security missions.
The H175 helicopter, which has been in service since 2014, belongs to the super-medium class and is designed to combine long-range capability with high payload and smooth flight performance. It is suitable for a broad range of onshore and offshore missions, including public services, military operations, disaster response and search and rescue.
Meanwhile, the ACH160 is the latest addition to the Airbus Corporate Helicopters family and is regarded as one of the most technologically advanced helicopters in the world. It features numerous patented technologies, increased cabin space and larger windows that enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
The acquisition is expected to significantly boost Ghana’s air mobility, disaster response readiness and defence operations, while also deepening strategic cooperation between Ghana and Airbus Helicopters.
