Seven dead, 18 injured in Komenda road crash

Seven people have died and eighteen others sustained injuries following a fatal road traffic accident at Komenda Asamasa on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway on Monday night, January 12, 2026.

The accident occurred at about 7:25 p.m. and involved a Sprinter bus with registration number GS 6705-21, travelling from Komenda towards Takoradi, and a Man Diesel truck, registration number GS 8394 Y, travelling in the opposite direction towards Cape Coast.

Personnel from the Komenda Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the distress call and arrived at the scene to commence rescue operations.

Six victims who were trapped in the Sprinter bus, which had veered into a nearby bush, were extricated by the rescue team and rushed to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Another female victim, who had earlier been transported to the same hospital before the arrival of the GNFS team, was also pronounced dead, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

The deceased comprise three females, including a pregnant woman, one baby, and three males. Meanwhile, eighteen other victims who sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rescued prior to the arrival of the GNFS team are currently receiving medical treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the Man Diesel truck lost control while overtaking another vehicle and subsequently collided head-on with the Sprinter bus travelling in the opposite direction.

Following the rescue operation, GNFS personnel cleared debris from the roadway to restore traffic flow and ensure safety at the accident scene. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy and preservation, while investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
