The Ajumako District Police Command has appealed to the government and the Minister for the Interior to deploy more personnel to the district, warning that inadequate staffing is severely undermining security.
The entire Ajumako Enyan Essiam District is currently served by only nine police officers, a situation the District Police Commander, ASP William Abbey, described as dangerous and unsustainable.
Speaking during a meeting with the District Chief Executive (DCE), ASP Abbey said the limited number of officers makes effective patrols impossible and exposes several communities to crime. He disclosed that some police stations in the district are manned by just one officer.
The commander also outlined serious infrastructure and logistics challenges confronting the command. According to him, the police administration block and barracks are in a dilapidated state, with portions of the ceiling on the verge of collapse. Office furniture is worn out and in urgent need of replacement.
In addition, the command’s only patrol vehicle is in poor condition, hampering police operations and efforts to curb criminal activities across the district.
ASP Abbey appealed to the DCE to facilitate major renovations of the police buildings and address accommodation challenges, which have led to the transfer of personnel out of the district.
In response, the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District Chief Executive, Hon. Andrews Kojo Duodu, pledged to prioritise security improvements in the district. He made the commitment during a visit to the police command, where he inspected the facilities.
Hon. Duodu assured the police that the identified challenges, including renovations and logistical needs, would be addressed. He also promised to escalate the issues to the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, for further intervention.
“I have been in office for less than a year, but I have already identified numerous challenges facing institutions in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District. I will do my best to address what I can,” he said.
The DCE commended officers of the Ajumako Police Command for their dedication and professionalism in maintaining peace and security despite the constraints.
