Nigeria’s Super Eagles have received a timely boost ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final clash against Algeria, with all outstanding group-stage bonuses now cleared.
Finance Minister Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite confirmed on Thursday, January 8, 2026, that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria, has streamlined the foreign exchange process to ensure players receive their match bonuses without further delay.
“All group-stage bonuses have been fully released and passed the required regulatory stages,” Uzoka-Anite said. “The final transfers to domiciliary accounts are currently in flight, and players can expect the funds to reflect starting today or tomorrow.”
The update comes after reports earlier this week that the Super Eagles’ training was disrupted due to unpaid bonuses, raising concerns about their preparations for the knockout stage. The minister assured that measures have been put in place to prevent similar delays in the future, noting that the process now aligns with international best practice.
With the issue resolved, the team is expected to travel to Marrakesh to resume full preparations for their quarter-final encounter. Uzoka-Anite emphasized the government’s support for the squad, saying: “No distractions, just football. We’re backing our boys to bring the trophy home.”
The Super Eagles have enjoyed a flawless AFCON campaign so far, including a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16, and will now focus on securing a semi-final spot against Algeria.
