The two students of Lawra SHS who got missing after a canoe they were in capsized on the Dikpe River have been found dead.
Ten students from Lawra Senior High School were swept away in the Black Volta (also known as the Dikpe River) on June 14, 2025.
The students, all members of the school’s cadet corps, had set out for their usual weekend jogging.
However, these ten students decided to cross the river using a canoe to reach the Burkina Faso side. Midway across, the canoe capsized.
A young man operating the canoe, believed to have come from the Burkina Faso side, managed to swim out and escaped. Three students were also able to swim to safety.
Initially, five students were confirmed dead, and two were reported missing.
However, on June 15, the death toll rose to seven after rescue teams recovered the bodies of two missing students.
This brings the total number of fatalities to seven, with all ten students who were on board the canoe now accounted for.
The two bodies were found at Derwo, approximately two kilometers downstream from the accident site.
Of the seven confirmed dead, five are female students and two are male. All seven bodies have been taken to the Lawra Municipal Hospital morgue.
The community is in mourning as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
