Uncompleted infrastructure projects across Senior High Schools and vocational institutions in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region are severely disrupting teaching and learning, prompting school managements to appeal for urgent government intervention.
Managements of six institutions, Ajumako Bisease Senior High School, Ajumako Afransi Vocational and Technical School, Ajumako Mando Senior High School, Enyan Abaasa Technical Institute, Enyanmaim Community Day Senior High School, and Enyan Denkyira Senior High School raised concerns over acute infrastructure deficits during an engagement with district authorities.
According to the school heads, overcrowding in classrooms and dormitories has become a major challenge due to the abandonment of critical projects, including classroom blocks, dormitories, teachers’ bungalows, and washroom facilities.
Some of these projects, they revealed, are nearly 90 per cent complete but have been left to deteriorate, resulting in a significant waste of public funds.
The stalled projects were initiated by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and successive governments but have remained uncompleted for several years.
Beyond infrastructure concerns, the managements also highlighted persistent teacher shortages and the encroachment of school lands by residents. They called for the recruitment of both teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as proper documentation of school lands to protect them from further encroachment.
In response, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Andrews Kojo Duodu, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and pledged to work closely with the Member of Parliament, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Ministry of Education to address the challenges.
“The number of uncompleted buildings in our Senior High Schools is unbearable, but I will do my best as DCE to address them,” he said. “Those projects we can handle at the District Assembly level will receive immediate attention.”
Mr Duodu also assured the schools of efforts to improve teacher numbers to enhance education delivery in the district. He commended the dedication of school managements and expressed optimism about transforming Ajumako Enyan Essiam into a leading education district in the Central Region and beyond, urging schools to remain focused on academic excellence.
