Seven arrested as joint police crack highway robbery network

The Accra Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Police Command, has arrested seven suspected members of a notorious highway robbery syndicate believed to be behind a string of violent robberies across the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions.

The arrests follow intelligence-led investigations into a robbery attack carried out on November 29, 2025, at Peduase in Aburi, where the suspects allegedly stormed a residence armed with firearms and robbed occupants of mobile phones, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash.

On January 6, 2026, officers from the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), working together with their Accra Regional counterparts, arrested Kofi Ishmael, aged 30, at Avenor in Accra. During interrogation, the suspect admitted his involvement in the Peduase robbery and identified Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Star Boy, as the ringleader of the gang.

Acting on the information, police arrested Bediako at Ablekuma Agape. A search at his residence led to the recovery of a pump-action gun concealed in a fence wall, along with four BB cartridges. The suspect also admitted participating in several robbery operations.

Further investigations revealed that the syndicate had been carrying out multiple highway robberies targeting motorists and trailer drivers along the Tema Motorway, Achimota Forest Road, Pokuase, Amasaman, Suhum, Nkawkaw and the Juaso–Kumasi stretch. Police say the suspects disclosed they were preparing to embark on another robbery at the time of their arrest.

Those currently in custody include Salia Mohammed, alias Kwaku Nuah (27); Kofi Ishmael, alias Ishmael Addo and Kofi Ketewa (32); Kwame Bediako, alias Star Boy and Nkokorpor (ringleader); Kwadwo Kalovi, alias Aticho; Mumuni Abdul Razak, alias Mogambo (39); Kwasi Akambuley, alias Kwasi Fresh (27); and Kwame Bonsu, alias Killer Ntua. One of the suspects is currently on admission receiving medical attention.

Police investigations have also linked the suspects to previous robbery cases involving market women and motorists, as well as a fatal robbery incident in which a driver lost his life. Some members of the gang are reported to have jumped bail in earlier cases that are still pending before the courts.

Exhibits retrieved so far include firearms, ammunition, machetes, knives, mobile phones and other items suspected to be proceeds of crime. Investigations are ongoing to arrest other accomplices believed to be at large.

The Accra Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to dealing decisively with criminal activities and has appealed to anyone with information that could aid the investigations to report to the nearest police station.
