A disturbing incident at Meduma in the Ashanti Region has led to the arrest of the proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex after he allegedly locked up two students during their BECE exams.
The arrest took place on Monday, June 17, 2025, and was led by the Education Director for Kwabre East Municipality, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, with support from Public Relations Officer Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane. The suspect, Mr. Afokawa Sarpong, was subsequently handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command for further investigation.
According to reports, on June 16—during the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination Mr. Sarpong allegedly confined two Junior High School candidates in a separate room to prevent them from taking the Mathematics paper. His reason: the students had not paid their registration fees.
Authorities say the students were only released after the paper had ended, a situation which has sparked outrage among parents and the general public.
Preliminary findings suggest the act could constitute “assault by imprisonment.” The police have begun a full-scale investigation, assuring the public that due legal processes will be followed.
This incident has once again raised concerns about the treatment of students in some private schools and the need for strict regulatory oversight, especially during national examinations.
