Health authorities in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region have raised alarm over a surge in HIV/AIDS infections, with more than 120 new cases recorded within a two-month period.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the district says investigations point to risky sexual behaviour and poor adherence to antiretroviral treatment as key factors driving the increase.
Senior Nursing Officer at the Ajumako District Government Hospital, Mr. Godsway Fia, disclosed that HIV/AIDS cases in the district have been rising steadily since 2025. He noted that some persons living with HIV are refusing to take their prescribed medications and are not using protection during sexual activity, worsening the spread of the virus.
According to him, the situation is being treated lightly by some affected persons, who ignore medical advice and fail to adhere to treatment protocols.
Mr. Fia further revealed that the district is also recording a high incidence of typhoid fever, describing Ajumako Enyan Essiam as a typhoid-prone area that requires urgent public health interventions.
The concerns were highlighted during a tour of government institutions by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Andrews Kojo Duodu, where the District Health Directorate outlined several operational challenges hampering effective healthcare delivery.
These include inadequate staffing, encroachment on health service lands, and the absence of fencing around the hospital and staff bungalows, exposing the facilities to theft and armed robbery attacks.
Some health facilities, including those at Ajumako Kwanyarko and Enyanmaim, were described as being in deplorable condition, with leaking roofs that have damaged documents and medical records during rainfall.
The directorate also cited the lack of staff accommodation as a major challenge, which discourages health workers from accepting postings to the district.
In an interview with Channel 247 News, Hon. Duodu pledged to address the challenges facing the Health Directorate to improve healthcare delivery in the district. He said issues beyond his authority would be escalated to the Member of Parliament, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Minister of Health for attention.
The DCE urged residents to regularly seek medical care, know their HIV and other disease status, adhere to treatment, and adopt healthy lifestyles.
He also inspected uncompleted health infrastructure projects and assured stakeholders of support to complete them, while commending health workers in the district for their dedication to duty.
