The opposition NPP has condemned what it says is the state sponsored persecution of its members by state security. The party in a statement issued to the media following the arrest of Ababio Kumi also known as Adenta Kumi for allegedly publishing false news and the raid on the house of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Barnard Antwi Boasiako(Chairman Wontumi), warned of what it says is a growing pattern of politically motivated intimidation and harassment of its members.
These actions according to the party represents a direct assault on Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law, and must cease forthwith.
A former NPP parliamentary candidate for Adenta, recently made headlines after petitioning President John Mahama to dissolve the committee investigating petitions against the Chief Justice which has the potential of removing her from office. However news broke on Friday morning that, men suspected to be from the National Investigations Bureau stormed his house and arrested him.
While the confusion with his arrest was still trending, news came in from Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital announcing that some heavily armed men from the police and National Security has stormed the home of chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako. The mission of the security operatives according to sources was to retrieved alleged stolen state property.
But the NPP in a statement condemned the incidents and described them as an attack on Ghana’s democracy.
