Newmont invests over $400,000 in sports dev’t in Birim North Municipality

Newmont’s Akyem mine has invested over $400,000 in sports development in the Birim North Municipality.

The 812-seater state-of-the-art facility includes a basketball and lawn tennis court with four popular stands, two VIP stands, washrooms and a gym.

This was revealed at the unveiling of a newly constructed multipurpose sports arena in Adausena, one of its ten (10) host communities in the Municipality.

“This project was one of the target areas for the board, as it will serve as a central point for talent development, youth empowerment, community development and social cohesion. It represents the work of all our stakeholders and we must be proud of the results” said Paul Suchmann Apenu, Community Development Manager – Newmont Akyem.

“The modern arena, funded by Newmont through its foundation, will serve as the hub for various sports disciplines in the assembly. In addition to basketball and long tennis, it will also explore sports like table tennis and netball, thus providing a comprehensive sports experience for the community and Ghana”, he added.

In response, the Chief of Adausena, Nana Boni Abankro V commended Newmont for the project and called on all stakeholders to take ownership to ensure its proper management.

The commissioning was attended by traditional authorities, Newmont’s Foundation board, employees, the assembly’s sports directorate and the media.

In addition to the sports arena, Newmont instituted an annual inter-community sports competition in 2006 and continues to serve as a key part of strengthening its partnership with the host communities.

The Foundation also completed other projects including a one-bed semi-detached teachers’ bungalow in Hweakwae, CHPS compound in Nkwateng and a durbar ground in Abohema.
