Man, pregnant wife and daughter killed in Yutong bus crash

A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of a man, his pregnant wife and their young daughter in the Upper East Region, throwing the Sumbrungu community in the Bolgatanga Municipality into mourning.

The fatal crash occurred on Sunday, February 15, between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm along the Bolgatanga–Navrongo highway. The family was reportedly travelling on a motorbike from Sumbrungu towards Anateem when they were struck by a Yutong bus with registration number AS 2294-26.

Eyewitnesses said the bus, which was heading from Navrongo to Bolgatanga, attempted to overtake a taxi near Anateem. In the process, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the motorbike carrying the family.

The deceased man has been identified as Francis Atingane Akipoe, a staff member of Bolgatanga Technical University. He was said to be travelling with his family to his in-laws’ residence to attend a funeral when the accident occurred.

Mr Akipoe and his daughter were pronounced dead at the scene. His pregnant wife, who sustained critical injuries, was rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The bodies were later deposited at the hospital morgue and subsequently conveyed to Sumbrungu on Monday, February 16, where they were laid to rest at the family home amid scenes of grief.

The incident has renewed calls from residents for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and enhanced road safety measures on the Bolgatanga–Navrongo highway, a stretch often described as accident-prone.
