President John Dramani Mahama has inspected newly delivered transformers in Tamale as part of government efforts to improve electricity supply across the Northern Regions.
About 100 transformers have already arrived in Tamale from a larger consignment of 500 units being supplied to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). The equipment is expected to enhance power distribution and address persistent outages affecting many communities.
The inspection formed part of the President’s working tour of the region, during which he visited the NEDCo warehouse to assess the progress of the intervention.
Officials say the transformers will replace overloaded, ageing and faulty units, a move aimed at improving reliability and reducing frequent power interruptions. Installation is set to begin immediately, with 30 transformers earmarked for Tamale, while other areas such as Wali and Bole are also expected to benefit.
The Energy Minister, who accompanied the President, indicated that the deployment is a critical step in strengthening the region’s electricity network and ensuring more stable supply.
President Mahama commended the sector ministry and NEDCo for what he described as a timely intervention. However, he urged residents to remain patient during the installation phase, cautioning that temporary outages may occur as work progresses.
He also stressed the need for effective communication, calling on NEDCo to keep the public informed ahead of planned interruptions to minimise inconvenience.
Additionally, the President underscored the importance of improved customer service, urging the company to respond promptly to complaints and strengthen engagement with consumers.
Government officials maintain that the transformer rollout forms part of a broader strategy to reinforce Ghana’s electricity infrastructure and deliver reliable power to underserved areas in the Northern Regions.
