IGP Yohuno, Others Conferred With Honorary Doctorates By A.M.U

The Accra Metropolitan University (AMU) made history on Saturday, 19th, 2025  as it held its first-ever graduation and conferral ceremony at the AMU Hall. The event marked a significant milestone for the young institution, which has rapidly expanded its academic offerings and embraced innovation in education.

Under the leadership of Prof. Goski Alabi, AMU conferred degrees on its pioneering graduates while honoring distinguished individuals for their contributions to society. The university also announced the addition of eight new academic programs, with three already accredited, and plans to introduce Bachelor of Law and Education programs soon.

Prof. Goski Alabi, a formidable figure in Ghanaian education, emphasized AMU’s commitment to excellence, stating, “We promise students an unmatched experience, blending modern education with cutting-edge AI systems to make learning engaging and impactful.”

The ceremony saw the conferral of honorary doctorate degrees on two outstanding personalities including; Christian Tetteh Yohuno (IGP) was Awarded a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa for his exemplary leadership in transforming the Ghana Police Service (GPS). In his acceptance speech, the IGP highlighted the evolving role of the police in Ghana’s democracy, citing reforms such as the establishment of DOVVSU and SWAT, improved recruitment standards, and efforts to combat cybercrime. “This honor is not dedicated to only me but my family and every officer who stands guard at night, mediates conflicts, and upholds justice,” he stated.

 Ing. Dr.  Patricia Obo-Nai was recognized with a Doctor of Science (D.Sc) Honoris Causa for her groundbreaking contributions to engineering and leadership in corporate Ghana.

Other award recipients included: Prof. Esi Awuah– Founders Heritage Award ,Archbishop Charles Agyin Asare – Prizewinning Alumnus Award (MBA HR) ,Mr. Enock- Beacon of Dedication Award ,Mr. Lawrence-Loyal Service Award ,Mr. Maxwell- Excellence Award .

AMU demonstrated its dedication to corporate social responsibility (CSR) by awarding scholarships to students from the Nungua community, security personnel, and even inmates, reinforcing its belief in inclusive education.

The Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai cautioned against the misuse of academic titles, emphasizing that they should only be earned through rigorous scholarly pursuit. ”Academic titles are exclusive for people who have gone through educational pursuit after accumulating years of experience in a University and acknowledged”, he stressed.

Representative of the Minister of Education, Mr. Fred Asiedu urged graduates to become “nation-builders and problem-solvers,” while calling for stronger research initiatives to propel Ghana forward. Transformation begins with a single bold step,” remarked Mr. Asiedu, a fitting summary of AMU’s remarkable journey so far.

The guest Speaker, Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong encouraged graduates to embrace technology ethically and uphold justice. “You are the architects of social progress,” he declared, urging them to see challenges as opportunities.

With ambitious plans to expand its programs and a strong focus on innovation, AMU is positioning itself as a leading institution in modern education. As the ceremony concluded, graduates and honorees left with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to contribute to Ghana’s development.

Founder of Accra metropolitan university, Professor Joshua Alabi, reflected on the remarkable journey of the institution highlighting the institution’s resilience, growth, and future aspirations.

 However, through relentless hard work and the unwavering support of stakeholders, the University has emerged stronger. Prof. Alabi expressed deep appreciation for the contributions of GTEC and partners in achieving this success.

Addressing the congregration, he urged the graduates to uphold to the core values of discipline, innovation, and responsibility. “Our journey has been marked by perseverance, and we must continue to build on this foundation,” he stated. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining strong social capital, fostering relationships that drive progress.
