The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP), has announced a temporary suspension of the application process for Ghanaian citizenship for persons of historical African descent.
In a public notice dated Sunday, February 1, 2026, the two institutions explained that the suspension forms part of a joint effort to further streamline and improve the citizenship application process. The move, they said, is intended to make the system more efficient, accessible and user-friendly for applicants across the global African diaspora.
According to the statement, the pause will allow the relevant agencies to introduce refinements aimed at enhancing the overall experience for prospective applicants, while ensuring a smoother and more seamless process when applications resume.
Despite the temporary halt, the Ministry of the Interior and DAOOP reaffirmed their commitment to welcoming members of the global African family back home, stressing that the suspension does not signal a withdrawal from Ghana’s broader diaspora engagement agenda.
The institutions assured the public that revised timelines and updated guidelines will be communicated in due course through official channels and expressed appreciation for the continued interest, enthusiasm and cooperation of prospective applicants.
