George Kofi Arthur declares bid for Western NDC chairmanship

Hon. Engineer George Kofi Arthur, a former Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, has officially declared his intention to contest the position of Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing his extensive political experience, party service, and professional background as key strengths.

Mr. Arthur, who served three consecutive terms in Parliament from 2005 to 2017, is regarded within party circles as a seasoned legislator with deep institutional knowledge.

During his time in Parliament, he held several strategic roles on key committees, including Roads and Transport, Public Accounts, Defence and Interior, Agriculture, Housing, and Employment and Social Welfare. He notably served as Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee and as Deputy Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee for over a decade.

Born on February 24, 1969, at Wassa Agona Amenfi in the Western Region, Mr. Arthur’s political career has been shaped by long-standing grassroots activism and public service.

He has previously served as General Secretary of the Mpohor Constituency and was also a member of the NDC’s National Communications Team, roles that party supporters say have strengthened his understanding of party structures at both constituency and national levels.

Academically, Mr. Arthur combines training in education, engineering, and governance. He holds a Diploma in Education with Distinction in Educational Technology from the Presbyterian College of Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology from the University of Education, Winneba, and a Master’s Degree in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He says this multidisciplinary background informs his technocratic and results-oriented leadership approach.

Beyond politics, Mr. Arthur has built a diverse professional career as a teacher, engineer, electronics specialist, and construction professional.

He has worked with institutions including Toyota Ghana, Anyasco Electronics, and Afrangua Construction Limited, contributing to major road infrastructure projects across the Western and Western North Regions. These experiences, according to his supporters, have given him first-hand insight into the region’s development needs, particularly in infrastructure and job creation.

Political observers within the NDC believe Mr. Arthur’s blend of legislative experience, administrative competence, and regional development exposure positions him as a strong contender for the chairmanship.

They argue that his ability to coordinate across constituencies and engage key stakeholders could help strengthen party cohesion and improve electoral performance in the Western Region.

As the NDC prepares for internal elections ahead of future national contests, Mr. Arthur’s declaration adds momentum to the Western Regional Chairmanship race, with party members expected to closely scrutinize the credentials and vision of all aspirants.
