Garu lights up as MP launches solar streetlights project

The Member of Parliament for the Garu Constituency in the Upper East Region, Dr. Thomas Winsum Anabah, has officially launched the installation of 80 solar-powered streetlights under the government’s Light Up Ghana initiative, aimed at improving security and boosting economic activities at night.

The project, which is being rolled out in collaboration with the District Chief Executive, John Abagre Abugba, and the constituency leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is expected to support the government’s 24-hour economy policy while promoting the use of clean and renewable energy.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Anabah expressed gratitude to the government and the Ministry of Energy for prioritising Garu, noting that the intervention comes at a critical time. He said the streetlights would help safeguard residents, particularly at night, and provide a sense of security across communities in the district.

Garu has in recent times recorded a surge in criminal activities, including shootings and robberies, making the solar streetlight project a major relief for residents who have long called for improved public lighting.

Dr. Anabah said the solar lighting initiative forms part of his broader vision to transform the Garu Constituency through sustained development. He highlighted several projects undertaken during his tenure, including the construction of schools, CHPS compounds, provision of healthcare equipment, water projects, rural electrification, and ongoing road infrastructure improvements.

The MP acknowledged the poor state of the road network in the district, describing it as a major concern. He noted that Garu currently has no tarred roads, a situation that has contributed to frequent accidents and hardship for residents. He assured the people that efforts are underway to attract road development projects to ease transportation challenges.

Dr. Anabah reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for more developmental initiatives that will enhance safety, stimulate local businesses, and improve the overall well-being of the people of Garu.
