The Social Welfare Department of the Binduri District Assembly has come under intense criticism over alleged irregularities in the registration of beneficiaries under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.
Residents in the district have raised concerns that the ongoing registration exercise is unfair and lacks transparency, claiming that several qualified vulnerable persons have been sidelined.
According to community members, some extremely poor households who meet the criteria for support under the government’s flagship social intervention programme have been excluded, while individuals perceived to be financially stable including assembly members and associates of officials have allegedly been enlisted as beneficiaries.
The LEAP programme, introduced by the Government of Ghana, is designed to provide cash transfers and support services to extremely poor households, including the aged, persons with severe disabilities without productive capacity, and orphaned or vulnerable children.
However, the alleged irregularities in Binduri have sparked outrage among residents, who argue that the programme is being mismanaged at the local level.
Some community leaders are calling for an immediate and independent investigation into the registration process to ensure fairness and restore public confidence in the system. They insist that those found culpable should be held accountable.
Efforts to reach officials of the Social Welfare Department in the district for their response were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Residents say they remain hopeful that authorities will intervene to safeguard the integrity of the programme and ensure that assistance reaches the truly deserving beneficiaries.
