Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has recorded a commanding victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries in the Western and Western North regions, winning in every constituency where results have been declared.
The former Vice President outperformed all other contenders, including Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong, consolidating his position as the clear frontrunner in the race for the party’s 2028 flagbearer slot.
Results from key constituencies across the two regions showed overwhelming support for Dr. Bawumia. In Tarkwa Nsuaem, he secured 967 votes, far ahead of Kennedy Agyapong’s 184 and Dr. Acheampong’s 55. Similar trends were recorded in Prestea Huni Valley, where Dr. Bawumia polled 853 votes, and in Amenfi East, where he won with 581 votes.
Strong performances were also recorded in Takoradi, Sekondi, Ahanta West, Effia, Ellembelle and Mpohor, with Dr. Bawumia leading comfortably in all contests. Party insiders say the results reflect broad-based confidence in his leadership and policy direction ahead of the national elections.
The primaries, held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, were generally peaceful, with party officials commending delegates for their orderly conduct and active participation in the democratic process. An estimated 211,000 delegates voted nationwide at more than 300 polling centres to elect the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
With the decisive outcomes in the Western and Western North regions, Dr. Bawumia has further strengthened his momentum as the contest progresses, placing him in a strong position heading into subsequent regional results.
