ActionAid Ghana has petitioned key state institutions to take urgent and coordinated action to secure justice and comprehensive support for a 14-year-old primary school girl who is a survivor of alleged sexual abuse and related health complications.
In a petition dated February 24, 2026, the organisation expressed deep concern about the welfare of the survivor, whose case is currently under investigation by the Ghana Police Service following a formal complaint lodged with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DoVVSU).
According to the petition, available information indicates that the Primary Six pupil endured repeated abuse that resulted in pregnancy. The situation came to light after the girl reportedly failed to return home from school on February 13 and later returned on February 15, prompting family members to initiate inquiries that led to disclosure and a police report.
Medical assessment conducted after the report confirmed that an attempt had allegedly been made to terminate the pregnancy prior to formal notification of authorities, requiring further clinical intervention and treatment for the survivor. The organisation said the development raises serious concerns about both the child’s safety and access to proper care.
While acknowledging the role of community leaders in maintaining social harmony, ActionAid Ghana warned against attempts at informal mediation or settlement, stressing that offences involving minors must be handled strictly through formal justice mechanisms under Ghanaian law.
The petition called for swift, transparent and survivor-centred investigations by the police to prevent impunity. It further urged the Office of the Attorney-General & Ministry of Justice to study the case docket and provide the necessary legal advice to ensure prompt prosecution of the alleged perpetrator.
Additionally, the organisation appealed to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to coordinate integrated survivor support services, including medical treatment, psychosocial counselling, legal assistance and protective interventions to aid the child’s recovery.
ActionAid Ghana also called on the Ghana Education Service to safeguard the survivor’s right to uninterrupted education through counselling support, stigma prevention measures and safe reintegration into school.
Copies of the petition were forwarded to several officials, including Gender Minister Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, among others, to ensure coordinated institutional response.
Reaffirming its commitment to advancing women’s rights and child protection, ActionAid Ghana urged decisive national action to secure justice for the survivor while strengthening child protection systems, particularly within affected communities in the Northern Region.
