SSNIT pays GH¢400m monthly to over 300,000 pensioners to combat old-age poverty

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says about GH¢400 million is currently being paid to over 300,000 pensioners every month as benefits aimed at reducing old-age poverty in Ghana.

The Trust also indicated that about 128,000 self-employed persons have been rolled onto the scheme, which focuses on curbing poverty in retirement and extending its coverage.

Kingsley Adjei-Manu, General Manager of Operations, in an interview with Citi News on the sidelines of the Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) awareness float in Koforidua on Thursday, dubbed “Ops-A-Thon,” called on all self-employed and people in the informal sector to trust SSNIT to protect their future.

“So far, we have enrolled about 128,000 self-employed persons in the scheme. So, we are still engaging them and getting people to enrol.”

“…So far, on average, every month we pay about GH¢400 million to about 300,000 pensioners, and that is helping reduce old-age poverty in Ghana. We hope that going forward in the years to come, we can get more people to join the scheme so that we can use the scheme to help reduce old-age poverty,” he stated.
