The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Bawku Chapter, has strongly condemned a deadly attack on women travellers along the Police Station–highway road in Bawku, which left one person dead and three others injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening as the victims were returning from Bolgatanga. According to MAYA, the women were ambushed by suspected armed bandits, described by the group as Kusasi assailants, in what it called a “barbaric and cowardly” act.
In a press release issued on April 20, 2026, the Association expressed deep sorrow over the attack, extending condolences to the bereaved family and sympathies to the injured. It also wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
MAYA warned that the attack highlights the deteriorating security situation in the Bawku area, particularly following the breakdown of mediation efforts led by the Asantehene. The group said armed criminals continue to operate with impunity along key routes, especially the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulimakom road, posing a serious threat to commuters.
The Association criticised what it described as the lack of urgent and decisive action from political leaders and security agencies, noting that the situation has created fear and uncertainty among residents and travellers.
It has therefore called on security agencies to immediately investigate the incident, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they are brought to justice. MAYA also urged the government to intensify security operations along the affected road to guarantee the safety of commuters.
Additionally, the group appealed to the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and other stakeholders to prioritise efforts to restore peace and stability in the area. It further called on the military to take decisive action against locations it claims have become safe havens for criminal elements.
“The people of Mamprugu and all law-abiding residents of Bawku cannot continue to live in fear while armed bandits take control of our roads,” the statement said. “Immediate action must be taken to restore law and order and protect innocent lives.”
MAYA stressed that failure to address the growing insecurity could erode public confidence in law enforcement agencies, insisting that authorities must act swiftly to prevent further attacks.
